Study reveals tomatoes are the key to a healthy heart

A new study has revealed that the carotenoid, lycopene, which is found in tomatoes can help reduce the risk of heart attacks by boosting blood flow and artery health.

Researchers at Cambridge University found that taking a lycopene-rich supplement boosted blood flow and improved the lining of vessels in patients with pre-existing heart conditions. It also increased the flexibility of their arteries by 50 per cent.
The chemical, lycopene, which gives tomatoes their rich red colour is known to break down fatty deposits in the arteries.
Heart disease is currently the cause of 180,000 deaths a year, scientists at the university believe that a lycopene supplement could help limit the damage caused and help cut the 49,000 deaths a year from strokes.

A diet rich in lycopene may offer a number of health benefits including acting as an antioxidant, cardiovascular benefits and aiding in skin health.
