Company background:
Viscofan BioEngineering combines natural sciences and engineering to provide innovative bioproducts as new solutions for cell biology, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine.

Viscofan BioEngineering is a business unit within the Viscofan group which has its headquarters in Pamplona, Spain. Our main operations are located at Viscofan’s subsidiary, Naturin Viscofan GmbH in Weinheim, Germany. Based on 80 years of experience at Naturin Viscofan in producing collagen products for the food market, the Viscofan BioEngineering activities are focused on the processing of bovine dermal collagen type I and its further development into products for cell biology and medicine.

Research and development:
Our research and development unit is focused on the collagen itself and also on new applications and protocols for the use of the Collagen Cell Carries (CCC) in cell biology, life sciences and regenerative medicine.
This allows us to develop tailor made products that can fulfill special customer needs. Additionally we have invested into orientating in vitro and in vivo trials using CCC for selected medical indications, performed in collaboration with different academic partners.

The Collagen Cell Carrier is produced from ultrapure bovine split skin derived collagen type I in a highly industrialized and standardized process. The raw material is obtained from veterinary controlled herds and procured from EU-certified abattoirs.
Quality control alongside the manufacturing procedure follows the recommendations of the American Society for testing and Materials (ASTM F 2212-02
Each single lot is finally tested for the growth supporting features in cell culture (if necessary also in vitro cytotoxicity according to DIN EN ISO 10993-5).
We provide collagen membranes in different sizes like: 100 × 150 mm, 50 × 50mm, as discs ready made for 10 cm cell culture dishes, for 6, 12, 24, 48 and 96 well plates and 6 well cell culture inserts.
Our coming soon product will be Collagen Microtubes with two different wall thicknesses, two different length and in an open and in a clipped format.

Viscofan BioEngineerings CCCs are characterized by the following:
•    Ultrathin structure of (20 µm)
•    Preservation of long fibres
•    No chemical cross-linking
•    Non-porous but semi-permeable membrane, exchange of soluble factors though membrane possible (e.g. for air-lift organotypic cell cultures)
•    Cell growth on both sides of the membrane possible (for co-culture systems)
•    High cell densities can be achieved without induction of apoptosis
•    Cells can grow multi-layered on top of the CCC
•    Cell seeded CCC can be embedded, both in cryosections and in paraffin
•    Fixation of cells followed by immunohistological or fluorescence staining directly on the CCC
•    High mechanical stability (e.g. tensile strength)
•    Very good elasticity and flexibility
•    High chemical an temperature resistance (+50 to-196°C)
•    Nearly no auto-fluorescence
•    Cell-scaffold complex can be replaced from cell culture plastics
•    Excellent biocompatibility in vitro and in vivo, nearly no induction of inflammation
•    Biodegradable
•    Excellent handling during surgeries, can be sutured without tearing of joints
•    Long shelf-life when stored at room temperature in the dark at least 5 years
•    Is sterilized by γ-irradiation (each CCC single packed)
