New sugar for direct compression

The direct compression excipient market is now rapidly expanding.

It is therefore subject to intense competition with products like compressible lactose, certain amidons and polyols and, of course, direct compression sugars.

Compressuc is a new sugar developed by Béghin-Say for direct compression, in compliance with the USP-NF pharmacopoeia. It is manufactured according to a new atomisation procedure and is characterised by a structure composed of spherical, hollow particles giving it remarkable flow and compressibility qualities.

Composed of a minimum of 95 per cent saccharose and a maximum of 5 per cent invert sugar and maltodextrin, Compressuc is an anhydrous excipient, entirely soluble, having a taste that masks the bitterness of its main active constituents. Compressuc is suited for making chewable, sucking and effervescent tablets.

Compressuc can be used to manufacture tablets by direct compression. There is no need to go through the traditional preliminary stages of granulation, drying and calibration, all of which are potential sources of degradation of the active molecules, as well as sources of loss during production.

Indeed, the manufacture of tablets necessarily requires an excipient endowed with compressibility properties, linked among other things to its porous structure, as well as certain characteristics of density and granulometric distribution.

The manufacture of tablets is therefore traditionally preceded by an industrial stage for the preparation of the excipients, performed by the pharmaceutical laboratory in order to obtain the required qualities in the mix.

Compressuc is naturally endowed with compression abilities. It is therefore a ready-to-use product for the pharmacist, with no preliminary preparation required. It therefore limits material investment costs, while saving on time and labour.
