Labs maximise diagnostic instrument uptime and efficiency with remote connectivity

While a growing number of serviceable assets can be monitored remotely, in reality, the majority are not. According to the Aberdeen Group, in 2009 only 16 per cent of serviceable assets were monitored remotely[1], and in 2010, that figure increased to 28 per cent[2].

Abbott Diagnostic Division is helping its customers reverse this trend bringing significant benefits to laboratories. More than 60 per cent of Abbott’s 2009 census of ARCHITECT Family diagnostic instruments operational worldwide are now connected to remote service and support through  AbbottLink network connectivity—more than double industry standards.

AbbottLink transmits critical operational data to technical support in real time, enabling support and service representatives to provide proactive monitoring and remote troubleshooting to identify and fixing problems before they arise.

One such laboratory is the Institut für Laboratoriumsmedizin in Stuttgart, Germany. The laboratory supports a 1200 bed hospital and operates 24 hours a day, processing more than 2 million tests annually.

“AbbottLink is the perfect solution for maintaining and improving the uptime of our instruments. When customer support identifies a problem with AbbottLink, they can often fix it before it impacts productivity. If a service representative needs to be called, they know exactly what to fix and are prepared—there are not delays of on-site trouble shooting,” said Dr. Matthias Orth, medical director at the Institut für Laboratoriumsmedizin. “My staff spends less time maintaining instruments and more time performing tasks that deliver diagnostic data to the clinic.”
