Syft Technologies

Need Fast, Quantitative VOC Analysis...at pptv levels?

Syft Technologies has the ideal analytical tool - the Voice200®, delivering a well-established, but newly available, technique called Selected Ion Flow Tube - Mass Spectrometry (SIFT-MS).
SIFT-MS uses super-soft chemical ionization to produce simple mass spectra with far less fragmentation than the conventional CI systems used in common GC/MS. Simplified spectra allow us to use a direct inlet system with no need for GC.
SIFT-MS uses three or more low energy reagent ions. By switching between reagent ions, SIFT-MS can differentiate compounds that have the same mass (isobarics) and same chemical formula (isomers). The range of analytes that SIFT-MS can detect is enormous, encompassing most volatile organics (VOCs) and inorganic gases, such as ammonia, nitrogen dioxide, and hydrogen sulfide. The result is absolute quantitation of analytes in air, at concentrations down to parts-per-trillion by volume, and so fast that real-time breath-by-breath analysis is now possible.
The Voice200® instrument is specifically designed for ease of use. Sample preparation and complex calibration steps are a thing of the past using SIFT-MS based instruments.

New Technology, Exciting Applications

Whilst many of you may not have heard of SIFT-MS before, the technology has a long history in research circles, and is gaining momentum as a commercial analytical technique in many application areas. NASA has been using the technology for some time to model reactions in Earths ionosphere and interstellar atmospheres.

The recent introduction of commercial SIFT-MS instrumentation from Syft, has led to the creation of new application areas. Customs agencies use Voice instrumentation for monitoring the level of harmful fumigants and toxic industrial chemicals in shipping containers and these instruments are also being used to analyse disease signatures in human breath in medical research programs. Environmental chemists, interested in ambient air monitoring or vehicle emissions are finding that SIFT-MS with its rapid, quantitiative measurements is adding value to their studies.

Oil and Gas exploration also benefits from the rapid and continuous hydrocarbon monitoring possible with Syft instruments adding value to mudlogging and surface Geo-chem analysis.

SIFT- MS Detection of Volatile Flavour Compounds

With its fast real-time quantitative analysis and the ability to analyze humid samples, including breath, SIFT-MS is ideally suited to flavour release testing and analysis. Much research and published work has been carried out in the last decade on real-time analysis of flavour compounds in vivo as they are eaten. Syft has developed a range of applications with leading academic and commercial entities including both in-mouth and headspace analysis of chocolate, dairy products, chewing gum and confectionary. With other applications in flavour release including Meat and Fish spoilage, Food safety monitoring for taints and odours...the list is endless.
