Micromachining for rapid healthcare product development

Current techniques for production of structures at the micron level can be labour-intensive, multi-stepped approaches and not necessarily suitable for truly rapid prototyping.

Bio Nano Consulting (BNC), the specialist bionanotechnology product development consultancy, has expanded its capabilities for advanced prototyping in this field with the commissioning of a laser micro-machining system for fabricating features down to 5microns.

The new system can be fitted with a wide range of high performance DPSS lasers to ensure that the laser matches the process required.

With the correct choice of laser almost any solid material can be machined. It can drill, cut and mill materials including silicon, glass, plastic, ceramic and metal with micron-level accuracy.

With an advanced CNC controller, products can be manufactured straight from a CAD model to machining the part, all within a single interface.

Housed within BNC's Imperial College London laboratories, the Oxford Lasers E-series laser micro-machining system facilitates rapid prototype fabrication for commercial organisations developing microfluidics and other applications of nanotechnology in the healthcare sector. This equipment is the latest asset in an investment of over £50m in facilities and equipment that backs BNC's product development capabilities.

Established in 2007, BNC applies nanotechnology tools to address real-world problems. For example BNC developed a novel, ultra-sensitive nanomechanical probes to provide new insight into how antibiotics work in order to combat antibiotic resistance. Providing a seamless concept-to-market route, BNC facilitates the development and commercialisation of new biomedical and nanotechnology-based products in the UK and Europe.
