Pure preservation with purox s

DSM Special Products has announced the launch of Purox S, the first sodium benzoate food preservative to guarantee 99.9% product purity, together with an excellent taste and odour profile. Purox S promises excellent flow control for easy processing and offers food processors a risk-free route to extended shelf-life.

The product will be manufactured from December 2001 in the world's first plant designed uniquely for sodium benzoate production and according to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidelines.

Derived from top quality benzoic acid, the premium quality of Purox S is maintained through a new purification technique perfected by DSM Special Products for its feedstock benzoic acid produced in a recently opened plant on the same site in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The largest integrated site of its kind, the facility guarantees stability of supply to meet ever increasing demand from the food industry for a premium quality, high performance preservative.

As well as exceptional purity, Purox S offers outstanding physical properties. A new fluid bed granulation process yields almost perfectly round particles with a narrow particle size distribution. The result? Easy handling thanks to a perfect combination of low dust content (due to the absence of small particles) and optimal dissolution (due to the absence of large particles).

Comments Hugo Schoot, General Product Manager of DSM Special Products: aaThe new plant is the first and currently the only manufacturing facility in the world to be designed according to GMP guidelines and specifically with sodium benzoate production in mind. As a result we can offer increased production with an unrivalled level of purity and performance and a product capable of meeting the most demanding end-product applications.''

Purox S can be supplied in a choice of packaging formats to meet specific process requirements. 25kg form-fill-sealed, moisture-resistant, tamper-proof polyethylene bags protect against contamination and extend shelf-life. Bulk quantities of 650kg and 900kg are also available.

Sodium benzoate has a long history of use as a food preservative and fungus inhibitor in a wide range of foods including beverages, fruit products, relishes, jams, pie and pastry fillings, olives and salads. It extends shelf-life by inhibiting microbiological growth, particularly in low pH systems. p
