Thermomicroscopy system introduced by Linkam

The system can rapidly heat to high temperatures.

Laboratory equipment supplier Linkam Scientific Instruments has developed a reflected light thermomicroscopy system with University of Huddersfield researchers.

“To date, much of the literature around thermomicroscopy is applied to organic systems, notably pharmaceutical materials,” said University of Huddersfield forensic and analytical science lecturer Dr Gage Ashton.

“However, having the capability to rapidly heat to high temperatures under controlled atmospheric conditions allows the exploration of materials such as alloys, ceramics, and minerals.

The IHS1700 is particularly suitable for the high temperature study of inorganic materials because the low volume provides precise atmosphere control.

The system’s infrared heating stage IHS1700 features a temperature range of room temperature to 1700°C. Its infrared light supports a maximum heating rate of 2000°C per minute.

Linkam and University of Huddersfield researchers will present the system and the results of their studies at TAC2025, 14th to 16th April.

 “Our IHS1700 stage is an example of how we collaborate with partners to manufacture systems that can meet research needs.

Last year, Linkam updated its cryo-CLEM microscope to support cryo-correlative light and electron microscopy, allowing researchers to analyse samples at temperatures < -195°C.
