Analytical instrumentation equipment company Shimadzu has launched the Nexera X4 UHPLC system for laboratories to limit interruptions, reruns and wasted solvent. The Nexera X4 is designed to achieve sharp peaks, fast analysis and low solvent consumption.
Nexflow technology minimises system-derived peak broadening without changing the internal diameter or length of the flow path tubing. By lowering extra-column dispersion, laboratories can realise the performance of UHPLC columns, particularly in applications where peak broadening outside the column can limit resolution.
A newly designed PDA detector further supports low dispersion. Its capillary-cell design reduces peak broadening, minimises refractive index effects from solvents and contributes to stable baselines as well as high sensitivity across a wide concentration range. Additionally, an autosampler supports low-dispersion injection and effective rinsing.

A binary gradient pump assists with fast analysis. The Nexera X4 features independently actuaged plungers and a pressure feedback mechanism to improve delivery responsiveness, reduce pulsation and support stable baselines, even during fast gradients under high-pressure conditions. The system can also pair with a solvent switching and online degassing unit that supports rapid mobile phase selection and more efficient method screening.
In addition to facilitating fast analysis, the Nexera X4 is also designed to support analytical miniaturisation. Precise micro-injection, accurate solvent delivery at low flow rates and reduced peak broadening make the system suited for use with narrow-bore columns.
The Nexera X4 can particularly help laboratories combining liquid chromatography with mass spectrometry. Earlier this year, Shimadzu released a versatile triple quadrupole gas chromatograph mass spectrometer, the GCMS-TQ RX series.
