Waters releases affinity chromatography columns

The columns enable measurements up to two days earlier for antibody titers.

Laboratory instrument manufacturer Waters Corporation has launched a set of affinity chromatography columns, the BioResolve Protein A Affinity Columns.

“One of the main bottlenecks in the development of biotherapeutics like monoclonal antibodies is the time required to identify and optimise a suitable cell line for antibody production," said Waters president and CEO Dr Udit Batra.

MaxPeak Premier Technology is featured in the columns, which reduces variability, helping to provide precise titer measurements.

The aim is to support earlier access to results in upstream bioprocessing, faster method optimisation in downstream biologics development and more flexibility in the manufacturing of antibody-based drug products.

The columns enable measurements up to two days earlier for antibody titers for both clone selection and bioprocess monitoring.

"[The columns] simplify two-dimensional workflows for simultaneous titer and aggregate analysis and can be readily integrated into new LC/MS setups to analyse in-process antibody samples without prior purification,” said Waters R&D and innovation director, quality assistance Arnaud Delobel.

“By streamlining workflows and enabling simultaneous assessment of multiple critical quality attributes, it helps cut project turnaround times and ultimately supports faster time to market for biologics.

Non-porous 3.5μm particles enable accurate quantification of antibody titers at lower concentrations and with less sample.  The columns can couple with size exclusion chromatography columns to measure titer concentrations and aggregate analysis in one run on any liquid chromatography (LC) system.

The columns are available in 2.1 x 20mm and 3.9 x 5mm formats.

Earlier this year, Waters added photodiode array detection into its Alliance iS Bio HPLC product line.
