Patients can break the extended-release tablets into dose-proportional segments
CDMO Recipharm and CNS pharmaceutical company Spektus Pharma have collaborated to develop and supply a portfolio of central nervous system (CNS) focussed products.
The partnership will draw on technological capabilities from the two companies to create flexible, breakable extended-release tablets.
“We are excited to join forces with Recipharm to expand the reach of our pipeline and bring our innovative CNS focused products to new partners and patients across global markets,” said Spektus CEO Zarvaan Merchant.
In addition to leading the research and development efforts, Spektus will provide its oral drug delivery platform Flexitab to generate the tablets. The tablets can be broken into dose-proportional segments to ensure controlled drug release both intact and broken.
Flexitab is designed for titration-sensitive medications and minimises side effects through personalised dosages and strengths that allow patients to manage symptoms at the lowest possible effective dose.
Recipharm will use its EU and FDA-approved manufacturing capabilities, regulations and global supply chain help to execute the technology transfer to one of its manufacturing sites.
Together, the pair aims to address the increasing demand for specialty pharmaceuticals, beginning with the antidepressant sector.
Although there are antidepressants available for conditions such as major depressive disorder and anxiety, many patients do not benefit from, or cannot tolerate, current treatments.
This is not the first time Recipharm has collaborated with others. Just before expanding its development capabilities last October, Recipharm partnered with pharmaceutical company Exela Pharma Sciences to enhance American manufacturing.
