Partnership to enhance delivery of therapeutic peptides

The project aims to bypass conventional oral peptide limitations

German biomedical research institute BioMed X is partnering with Danish healthcare company Novo Nordisk to enhance drug development.

A research team will address the efficient oral delivery of therapeutic peptides, through the support of both companies.

“We are excited about this new partnership with Novo Nordisk,” said BioMed X CEO Dr Christian Tidona. “Making peptide drugs such as GLP-1 receptor agonists orally available via new formulation technologies will have a significant impact on patients’ lives.

The project is titled “Prolonged retention of oral peptide formulations in the gut” and will be hosted at BioMed X in Heidelberg.

Conventional oral peptide formulations are limited by low intestinal permeability and rapid gastrointestinal transit. Prolonged retention in the lower small intestine would allow for continuous release and more efficient absorption.

The project aims to develop oral formulation technologies that achieve site-specific, prolonged retention of tablets or capsules within the lower small intestine. The objective is to improve the absorption and bioavailability of peptide-based therapeutics.
