Diasorin combats drug-resistant fungal pathogen

The company’s assay aids in prevention and control of Candida auris.

Pharmaceutical company Diasorin has launched its Simplexa C auris Direct kit, an assay aiding in the identification of patients suspected of Candida auris colonisation.

Candida auris (C. auris) is an emerging multidrug-resistant fungal pathogen with a high mortality rate.

Angelo Rago, President of Luminex. “The Simplexa C. auris Direct kit fills a much-needed gap in C. auris molecular detection and will help to empower labs to easily, accurately and rapidly control and prevent Candida auris infections in healthcare settings”

C. auris is generally resistant to one more or classes of antifungal drugs, and can cause ear, wound, blood and urinary tract infections that spread throughout the body. It can spread through contact with patients even if they are asymptomatic, as well as from contaminated surfaces.

The ability to swiftly identify patients with C. auris colonisation supports infection control and helps to prevent infections in vulnerable patients.

The assay is used for direct in vitro qualitative detection of C. auris DNA from a composite swab of groin of patients.

The targeted molecular diagnostic test is performed on the Liaison MDX, a real-time PCR thermocycler for single or multiple target amplification and fluorescence melt curve analysis. The Liaison MDX provides results in under two hours.

The real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay detects all six C. auris clades identified globally.
