CN Bio launches preclinical toxicology testing kit

The kit is built upon CN Bio’s human-derived liver microphysiological system to provide human-relevant insights into drug safety parameters

Many drugs entering clinical trials ultimately fail for many reasons, such as a failure to bridge the gap between in vivo and in-vitro samples and risks posed to human physiology.

One way biotechnology company CN Bio found to maintain human accuracy while studying in vitro material is its Organ-on-a-chip System, which replicates human physiology and function in vitro by culturing physiologically relevant combinations of primary human cells together in a perfused environment supplied by fluidic flow. 

This has led to CN Bio’s Liver-on-a-chip technology, which is helping to reduce hepatotoxicity concerns.

However, CN Bio has launched an additional solution for preclinical toxicology testing, the PhysioMimix Dili assay kit: Human 24.

The kit is built upon CN Bio’s human-derived liver microphysiological system (MPS), helping to provide human-relevant insights into drug safety parameters.

“Toxicology testing is perhaps the most essential part of developing a new drug, but our current preclinical methods often fall short, putting therapeutic developers at risk of extremely costly, late-stage failures,” said CN Bio senior scientist and project manager Dr Ovidiu Novac.

CN Bio’s liver model recreates functional and metabolically active hepatic tissues. It can be maintained under perfusion for up to two weeks and incorporates Kupffer cells to capture crucial aspects of the human innate immune system, facilitating deeper insights into the most complex toxicology events over extended periods of time.

Each assay kit has 24 wells, allowing users to simultaneously assess up to eight conditions in triplicate. This means a selection of drug candidates can easily be screened in a way that reduces cost and improves efficiency.

The kit leverages primary human tissue, thus supporting the development of human-specific drug modalities. This makes it simple to see which therapeutic candidates are most promising.

“Previously available via our CRS, we chose to further develop our Dili assay into a simple, all-in-one kit, in response to increasing demand for human-relevant, preclinical toxicology testing,” said Novac.

“With Human 24, PhysioMimix users can now more easily replicate our industry-leading DILI assay in their own lab, providing deeper mechanistic insights into drug-induced hepatoxicity and enabling more confident progression of drug candidates into the clinic.”

Human 24 can be easily integrated into laboratories to optimise preclinical drug development.
