A new study from Fujita Health University introduces a simple, non-invasive stool testing method that uses specific bacterial markers to help screen for colorectal and pancreatic cancers.
Pancreatic and colon cancers are notoriously difficult to catch in their earliest, most treatable stages, and current screening tools like colonoscopies or specialized blood tests can be invasive or inconclusive. The research team developed a streamlined DNA test (targeted qPCR) that measures key bacterial signals in fecal samples, accurately spotting cancer-related microbial signatures.

The findings were as follows:
- Strong early detection signals: The test successfully distinguished both colorectal and pancreatic cancer samples from healthy controls, even showing strong potential for catching early-stage pancreatic cancer.
- Simple and Home-Friendly: Unlike expensive full-genome sequencing, this targeted approach uses standard DNA testing techniques, making it suitable for low-cost, routine home testing.
What’s new?: Instead of relying solely on hospital-based procedures or complex blood markers, this approach acts as a practical ‘first-step’ filter. High-risk individuals could use regular home stool tests to determine exactly when they need follow-up imaging or endoscopic scans, helping catch tumors long before symptoms appear.
Lead researcher associate professor Tadashi Fujii says, “Our findings suggest that a common fecal microbial panel can produce different disease-specific signatures for CRC and PC. The results also raise the possibility that fecal qPCR could provide complementary information without invasive sampling.”
