Medasense is collaborating with the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University. The collaboration is set to involve a clinical trial to examine the use of Medasense’s Nociception Level Index (NOL) technology during spine surgery procedures at Jefferson’s academic medical centre in Philadelphia.
Spine surgery is a high-impact clinical area in which variability in analgesic management remains significant. By using NOL technology, clinicians can personalise analgesic dosing based on a patient’s actual physiological requirements. Jefferson’s medical centre performs 3,000 spine surgeries annually. The collaboration hopes to generate real-world insights while supporting the development of initial US health economic evidence.

The study will be led by Jaime Baratta, professor in the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University, who will serve as the principal investigator. The study will investigate whether NOL-guided anaesthesia improves recovery metrics compared to the current standard of care and assess the health economics associated with adopting the technology. These insights intend to support hospitals in adopting data-driven approaches to enhance patient recovery and optimise healthcare resources.

By evaluating NOL-guided anaesthesia in spine surgery, we aim to better understand how data-driven approaches may reduce opioid variability and support improved recovery pathways.”
