Campden BRI

- for all your analytical needs
Campden BRI is the UK's largest independent membership-based organisation carrying out research and development for the food and drinks industry worldwide. We work with most of the top global food and drinks companies, including all of the major UK supermarkets. Facilities include fully equipped food processing halls, product development facilities, a leading-edge sensory analysis suite, and extensive analytical laboratories.

As well as standard UKAS-accredited methods for microbiological and chemical compositional analysis of food and drink, Campden BRI has extensive expertise and accreditation in the identification of chemical, microbiological and physical contaminants, and determining whether a food is what its label says it is (authenticity).  We are also involved in developing and evaluating the methods themselves, and in helping our clients with the design of their laboratories.

Chemistry

Understanding the chemical make-up of your products is essential for a variety of reasons: health claims, nutrition labelling and allergen warnings to name but three, but there are many other aspects of food chemistry that need to be appreciated. As well as the nutritional composition of food, you need to know about levels of natural toxicants and allergens, and of potential contaminants, such as pesticides and packaging migrants. We have a wealth of knowledge, skills and state-of-the-art equipment (such as gas chromatography and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry) for chemical analysis and related issues, such as meat content calculations.

Microbiology

We undertake a wide range of tests covering pathogens, spoilage organisms, and indicator organisms. We can also offer advice on the latest rapid methods, and identify unknown microorganisms, classifying them to a specific strain. Often, the only way of knowing the origins of a particular contaminant is to characterise it to a specific strain and then match that with a strain elsewhere in the environment or in a particular food ingredient. Campden BRI is a world leader in this type of work, utilising state-of-the-art methods that best solve your problems. We also offer back-up information as part of the service, such as details of possible sources of the problem organisms, or information about known food poisoning outbreaks.

‘Foreign bodies’

There is little more off-putting to customers than when they find what they consider to be a 'foreign body' in their food. Sometimes the object is a perfectly natural component of the food - but in all cases it is important to find out what it is and how and when it got there. Campden BRI offers a fast, accurate service for the identification of adventitious and deliberate contaminants, helping to pinpoint its source and advising on preventative solutions. Among the type of contaminants we have expertise in are: glass, metal, stones, plastics, insects, animal hairs and plant fibres.

We also administer Proficiency Schemes, which are designed to monitor and improve the quality of analytical laboratories. One such is the Brewing Analytes Proficiency Scheme. Another is our newly relaunched Campden Microbiology Proficiency Scheme.
