A Camspec M400PC diode-array fibre-optic spectrophotometer is helping NanoMagnetics develop new technology in the field of magnetic storage devices.

Tiny magnetic particles are grown within hollow spheres of the protein ferritin under carefully controlled process conditions.

These particles, which are 10 000 times smaller than a human hair, can be used to prepare magnetic media such as hard disc drives or data storage devices for hand-held computers, and because of their size uniformity and good packing density, they have the potential to extend storage densities by 100 times compared with today's technology.

The production process is carried out under clean-room conditions and needs to be closely monitored by measuring the light absorption of the formulation at several different wavelengths.

To avoid contamination and permit continuous monitoring, the spectrophotometer is equipped with a precision Hellma dip-probe permanently immersed in the reaction mixture.

The use of diode-array optics allows multiple wavelengths to be measured simultaneously without interference from ambient light (the reaction is conducted in a glass vessel).

The M400PC spectrophotometer incorporates light sources and monochromator in a single unit and is fully controlled and monitored by the same PC that controls the process. u
