Mussel extract could mean less pain and improved mobility

A new clinical study conducted by the University of Queensland confirms that the green lipped mussel extract GlycOmega-PLUS is proven to have anti-inflammatory properties in humans. Participants diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knees completed an eight-week trial which showed that GlycOmega-PLUS by Aroma (NZ) Ltd significantly reduced joint pain by 59 per cent and improved joint mobility.

During the non-randomised single group allocation trial, 21 men and women aged between 41 and 87 took a daily supplement of 3000mg and completed a set of standardized questionnaires (WOMAC, Lequesne Index) measuring pain, stiffness and physical function. Furthermore, all were asked to keep two diaries that recorded daily intake of GlycOmega-PLUS, daily knee pain experienced and any rescue medication taken for knee pain. In order to determine the safety of the supplementation, participants were included in a clinical safety trial and filled in a health-related quality of life questionnaire (SF-12) assessing different dimensions of physical and mental health.

Baseline screening was followed by two measurements taken after four and eight weeks. Significance tests were performed on the WOMAC and Lequesne Index (average) between baseline and week four, week four and week eight, and baseline and week eight. The WOMAC demonstrated improvements in pain, stiffness and physical function of 59 per cent, 41 per cent and 42 per cent respectively from baseline to week eight. The Lequesne Index showed a 30 per cent improvement from baseline to week eight. The amount of rescue medication taken during the trial decreased and the general physical function indices improved. Overall, the results confirm that supplementation with 3000mg GlycOmega-PLUS per day is safe and may be indicated for significant symptomatic relief of joint pain and poor mobility in patients diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knees.

GIycOmega-PLUS is a proprietary blend of cold opened greenshell mussel meat (perna canaliculus) and a botanical antioxidant which together provide significant levels of anti-inflammatory activity. GIycOmega-PLUS is processed from selected live greenshell mussel meat which is full of lipids and omega-3 fatty acids. This ensures that only the highest quality mussel extract reaches the customer. GIycOmega-PLUS is freeze-dried at low temperatures, ensuring that bio-activity is optimized for maximum anti-inflammatory activity.

Green lipped mussel products have been marketed for the treatment of arthritic symptoms since the early 1970s. Since then, numerous in vitro and animal studies have suggested that green lipped mussel extract has a modulating role in regulating inflammation. This new study now confirms the efficacy of supplementation with GlycOmega-PLUS in humans diagnosed with osteoarthritis of the knees.
