Fast lyophilisation technique benefits

Genevac have developed an effective Fast Lyophilisation technique for preparing weighable samples from difficult-to-dry HPLC purification fractions.

Using HPLC purification methods involving solvents such as water or DMSO - life science researchers regularly encounter a significant number of samples that do not dry well post purification. Typically, these stubborn samples form a gum or oil that creates problems including accelerated sample degradation (due to residual solvent) and difficulty in accurate weight determination. Using a Genevac HT Series evaporator and proprietary LyoSpeedTM technology, HPLC fractions can be concentrated to a few millilitres and then frozen and rapidly lyophilised to produce a diffuse dry powder, which can easily be re-dissolved or weighed out.

Traditional lyophilisation is a trusted multi-stage drying process, based upon sublimation, used to extract water from pharmaceuticals, foods and natural products such that the resultant samples remain stable and are easier to store at room temperature. However, the slow speed of the traditional lyophilisation process and limitation of solvents that can be removed sometimes restrict its potential. A study done at the Genevac laboratory (http://www.genevac.org/en/ArticleDetail.asp?S=6&V=1&ProductDownload=83) shows that HPLC purification fractions containing water can be lyophilised in a greatly reduced time using LyoSpeed technology, while providing the same sample quality.

Genevac, a SP Industries company, was founded in 1990. Today the company employs around 85 people, with manufacturing, R&D and marketing headquartered in Ipswich, UK. Genevac today offers a comprehensive portfolio of evaporators to suit almost any solvent removal application, purchasing budget or productivity requirement.
