This nationwide registry will collect data from Myasthenia Gravis patients across the United States
The first patient has been enrolled in Thermo Fisher Scientific’s new PPD CorEvitas Myasthenia Gravis (MG) Registry. This nationwide registry will collect data from MG patients across the United States to examine and assess existing and emerging MG therapies, tracking health conditions, medication usage, safety issues and the overall effectiveness of treatments.
MG is a rare autoimmune disorder of the neuromuscular junction, which causes muscle weakness and fatigue that worsen with activity and can fluctuate daily. MG affects people of all ages, but is most common in adults, with the cause of the disorder still unknown. It is estimated that around 70,000 people in the US have been diagnosed with MG.
Those diagnosed with MG experience a range of symptoms with varying degrees of severity and may have periods of remission with no symptoms, severe episodes that worsen with daily activities, or myasthenic crisis. There is currently no way to cure or prevent MG, but treatment can help manage symptoms.
The registry, which is now active in the US and enrolled its first patient on November 10, has been created to collect clinical data from patients under the care of a neurologist in academic and private practice settings.
Peter Wahl, vice president and global head of scientific affairs for PPD CorEvitas Clinical Registries, Thermo Fisher Scientific, said, “The CorEvitas MG Registry will enrol and follow patients with both ocular and generalised forms of MG. Data collected prospectively in this new clinical registry will enable us to study progression of disease and evaluate the safety and effectiveness of medications used in the treatment of generalised MG. It will also help us understand the impact of the disease with respect to clinical burden as well as from the patient perspective.”
Wahl added, “As with all of our registries, our aim is to build an infrastructure that supports a long-term commitment to regulatory-grade data collection, advancing real-world research and improving lives for patients diagnosed with MG.”
This registry was launched under the scientific guidance of James Howard, professor of neurology, medicine, and allied health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and Michael Benatar, professor of neurology and public health sciences at the University of Miami Health System. This is the 14th independent registry from PPD CorEvitas Clinical Registries, part of PPD’s clinical research business within Thermo Fisher Scientific.
