Bruker launches mass spectrometer for biopharma R&D

The technology will assist protein researchers and biologics developers.

Scientific instrument manufacturer Bruker Corporation has launched the timsOmni system, a timsTOF-based mass spectrometer for biological and pharmaceutical research and development.

“The timsOmni will also be extremely valuable for biopharma drug discovery and development, as well as for biologics QC analysis, from therapeutic antibodies to antibody-drug conjugates,” said Bruker CEO Dr Frank Laukien.

The timsOmni helps to offer deep structural insights into the functional or pathological proteoforms or oligonucleotides. The technology enables protein researchers and biologics developers to tailor dissociation pathways more quickly and for deeper insights.

"The timsOmni is a new lamppost for functional protein science, shining a light on functional and pathological proteoforms and enabling a new protein science paradigm for fundamental cell and molecular biology, signal transduction, cancer, neurodegeneration and other disease research,” said Laukien.

The timsOmni allows for the identification of low-abundant, aberrant proteoforms, the structurally altered versions of proteins arising from genetic mutations, alternative splicing and post-translational modifications that deviate from normal physiological forms. Such deviations disrupt protein function, misfolding or aggregation, often playing critical roles in the onset and progression of disease.

The timsOmni is supported by OmniScape, Bruker’s proteomics software featuring algorithms for de-isotoping complex spectra, automated charge state assignment, de novo protein sequencing support and sequence confirmation.

Bruker’s NEOS off-line nanoESI comes with the mass spectrometer for the low infusion flow rates required for the study of protein complexes, allowing for extended analysis of scarce samples. The NEOS source works with coated and non-coated emitters.

Late last year, Bruker introduced the Dimension Nexus atomic force microscope.
