Hamamatsu launches Photonics Innovation Awards

Participants are invited to propose solutions to critical challenges across any relevant sector

Photonics technology and products provider Hamamatsu Photonics has introduced the inaugural Photonics Innovation Awards, an initiative aiming to highlight the importance of photonics technology and foster its innovation.

Participants are invited to propose solutions to critical challenges across any relevant sector.

“We aim to leverage advanced photonics technology, and we welcome product or solution proposals that focus on innovation, relevance, and community impact,” said Hamamatsu technical marketing engineer Luigi Ghezzi.

As the use of photonics is prolific across industries, participants could choose to address a wide range of topics, including sustainability, healthcare, and autonomous driving.

Whatever form the idea takes, participants should be confident their submission has the potential to deliver societal benefits through market-ready solutions.

The awards are open to a broad audience, including start-ups, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and established industry players.

Winners of the Photonics Innovation Awards will receive a €10,000 cash prize and one year of promotional support to help develop their projects.

Crucially, winners also gain access to Hamamatsu’s Pilot Line service, which provides them with technical assistance throughout their project development. This includes guidance identifying business models, prototyping, connecting with potential partners and mass production.

“Light has always played a crucial role in our lives, but never before have we harnessed its potential to this extent,” said Ghezzi.

“From telecommunications to advancements in healthcare and even in the emerging field of quantum optics, photonics is pivotal in driving modern innovation. Now is the ideal time to stimulate, promote, and support these innovations through our awards program.”

Submissions will be evaluated based on several categories: Innovation, Feasibility, Relevance and Impact, Material Quality, and Market Potential.
