The Institute’s surprising research results and technical demonstrations will focus on HPLC challenges and potential solutions
Research body and software developer, the Molnár-Institute, will be at this year’s Eastern Analytical Symposium (EAS) to discuss pH issues in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).
The Institute will deliver a presentation by senior scientist Arnold Zöldhegyi, as well as a demonstration of the latest developments in its DryLab 4 software, an HPLC modelling and analytical platform.
DryLab 4 helps analytical scientists understand chromatographic interactions and reduce analysis time and increase robustness.
One of Zöldhegyi’s talks is a technical presentation on the session “Leveraging Modeling for Chromatographic Analysis”, which will take place in the afternoon on the conference’s final day.
The presentation is called “Does pH Matter? Comparing Multidimensional Design Spaces of Volatile and Non-Volatile Buffer Systems”, and features DryLab’s capabilities through the summarisation of Zöldhegyi’s research.
His research was conducted in collaboration with Institute president Dr Imre Molnár, University of Pannonia’s Dr Krisztián Horvath and pharmaceutical company Egis Plc’s Dr Robert Kormány.
The team used DryLab 4 and AQbD-based modelling methodology to determine whether a volatile acetate buffer could replace an equimolar non-volatile phosphate buffer within the equivalent pH range to separate ionisable compounds in HPLC.
This is particularly relevant for reverse-phase applications where defining pH can be difficult due to the continuous presence of organic solvent. Additional challenges in acidity and alkalinity relationships can be caused by temperature variations and differing buffering capabilities
The team compared separation models of terazosin and selected impurities constructed as 3D models. They were surprised to identify clear differences between the two buffer systems in addition to the equivalences they expected.
This year’s EAS is 18th to 20th November in Plainsboro, New Jersey, USA and features the theme “Partners in Problem-Solving”. The theme emphasises how analytical scientists can build strong, cross-functional partnerships to unearth complex solutions through data. The symposium requires attendees to register.
