Employee engagement increases profits

Kimberly-Clark Professional has launched a new platform providing laboratory managers with tools and services to aid employee engagement in sustainability, compliance, anti-contamination and health and safety matters.

“We believe people are the most important asset in any laboratory and, by engaging employees in matters of environmental sustainability, contamination control and their own health, safety and well-being, laboratory managers can leverage the benefits of accumulative effort from all parties,” explains Kristin Barrett, Kimtech Category Manager, Europe, Kimberly-Clark Professional. “But you don’t have to take our word for it. There is plenty of research out there to support the claim that employee engagement can improve health and safety, and increase profits.”

Research reported in Effective practice guidelines: Employee engagement and commitment by the Society for Human Resource Management, found that engaged employees are five times less likely to have a safety incident than non-engaged employees, for example. They are also seven times less likely to have a lost-time safety incident.

Additionally, the 2003 Towers Perrin Talent Report found that companies with highly engaged employees demonstrated above average revenue growth in their sector, while companies with low engagement reported below average growth.

“Actively engaged employees care more, are more productive, give improved service and are less likely to have accidents or take sick days. Happier employees result in happier customers. Happier customers ultimately drive profits,” said Barrett. “It therefore makes sense for laboratory managers to focus on employees as much as on customers.”

With this in mind, Kimberly-Clark’s scientific division has produced a set of tools and services aimed specifically to help laboratory managers engage employees in health, safety, sustainability and productivity. Tools include video, specialist information guides, training, recycling services, posters and leaflets, and easy-access compliance services among others.
