Laser device suitable for painless antigen application

Pantec Biosolutions AG, the manufacturer of P.L.E.A.S.E.® Professional, a portable laser device for the precise microporation of the skin, has contributed to three scientific publications illustrating the effectiveness of the technology for a new form of immunotherapy in an allergic asthma mouse model.

The three papers focus on different aspects of Pantec Biosolutions’ work with P.L.E.A.S.E. in immunotherapy and are published in Vaccine, Allergy and the Journal of Controlled Release[3].

The Pantec P.L.E.A.S.E. (Precise laser epidermal system) device was used by Prof. Josef Thalhamer, Dr Richard Weiss and co-workers from the University of Salzburg in a transcutanoeous immunotherapy (TCIT) protocol to treat allergic mice. The curing effect of TCIT with P.L.E.A.S.E. was comparable to the standard treatment: subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) using needle-injection. In contrast to SCIT, TCIT is absolutely painless and minimises inflammatory side effects.

Conventional SCIT starts with 12-16 subcutaneous needle injections of increasing doses of allergen, followed by monthly injections of the maintenance dose over 2-3 years. The high volume of painful needle applications and unpleasant side effects are major reasons why patient compliance is often low over the long period required for a successful allergy treatment. TCIT with P.L.E.A.S.E. offers a painless alternative.

Dr Christof Boehler, the CEO of Pantec Biosolutions, said: “I am delighted that our P.L.E.A.S.E. technology has been successfully used in this series of experiments. The results provide strong evidence that antigen delivery to the correct dermal layer works effectively.”

Prof. Josef Thalhamer, co-author of the three papers, commented: “SCIT treatment can be a lengthy and uncomfortable experience resulting in decreasing patient compliance over the long time period necessary for a successful allergy treatment. Painless TCIT using P.L.E.A.S.E. combined with individual allergy patches could replace the SCIT in the future leading to an increase in completed treatment regimens.”
