eLab - Process Technology

‘Real’ over temperature protection

Aprocess safety and protection feature is now included as standard on the Huber third generation Unistat series. To be safely operated in the work place, any equipment fitted with a heater must also be fitted with an ‘Over Temperature’ safety cut-out. This is set by the user to a level that adds a layer of safety to the temperature control system in case there is a fault with the controller.

Once the safety cut out set point is reached the system alarms and shuts down. This is safe under normal circumstances but imagine that the over temperature alarm is triggered because of heat generated by an exothermic reaction.

Now, when the unit alarms and shuts down the only system able to remove the increasing heat is disabled! With the Huber Unistat the user can enable the ‘Process Safety’ over-temperature alarm function. Once enabled, should the over temperature set point be reached as a result of a rising process temperature the Unistat automatically goes into a ‘crash cooling’ mode where the priority is no longer temperature control but 100percent heat removal.

Huber is based in Offenburg, Germany. www.huber-online.com
