"The current medical arsenal is inadequate for fighting tuberculosis," Wayne Pisano, head of Sanofi's vaccines division, said in a statement.
"Sanofi Pasteur and SSI are joining forces to develop a vaccine that may have a major impact on global health by preventing a disease that currently infects one person in the world every second."
Austrian bio-tech company Intercell said in a statement the vaccine, containing antigens discovered by SSI and Intercell's adjuvant IC31, was being tested in clinical trials.
The only TB vaccine in use in the world today is over 80 years old and is mainly effective in protecting infants, Sanofi noted. TB kills 1.5 million people every year.
