Automated inhaler waste firing systems

RTS Life Science, a worldwide supplier of automated sample management and drug delivery testing systems, announced the launch of its new Walkaway Specialist line of fully automated solutions for waste firing of pressurised metered dose and multidose dry powder inhalers. This new offering from RTS Life Science includes the Walkaway Specialist pMDI (pressurised metered dose inhaler) Waste Shot Firer and the Walkaway Specialist mDPI (multi-dose powder inhaler) Waste Shot Firer.

Manual methods are often used to test inhalers, however manual testing is extremely time consuming and therefore results in low testing throughput. In addition, only a small number of doses need to be analysed when testing inhalers, typically at the start, middle and end of a device life, consequently a large proportion of shots must be fired to waste. The automated Walkaway Specialist systems from RTS Life Science increase testing throughput by processing multiple devices in parallel. The systems are fitted with shot detection technology and offer integral waste collection and filtration, allowing waste shots to be safely collected for later disposal.

The Walkaway Specialist pMDI Waste Shot Firer is designed to efficiently process batches of up to ten inhaler devices through the waste firing process. Key capabilities of the pMDI Waste Shot Firer include ex-actuator firing, ex-valve firing, linear shaking and inversion shaking. The pMDI system is a cradle based unit for easy loading and can easily accommodate multiple device types.

RTS' Walkaway Specialist mDPI Waste Shot Firer incorporates a carousel design to accommodate up to 30 metered dose dry powder inhalers for waste firing. The high capacity of the mDPI Waste Shot Firer enables extended periods of unattended operation. In addition, the new system has flexible device actuation stations for device priming, providing a robust and reliable solution for conditioning and actuating inhaler devices.

Mike Pollard from RTS Life Science comments, 'The automated Walkaway Specialist range from RTS Life Science provides the ideal solution to a number of well documented problems associated with manual methods of inhaler testing. The addition of these systems to our current product portfolio further demonstrates the company's position as a leader in drug delivery automation.'

The addition of the Walkaway Specialist systems to the RTS Life Science product range brings the benefits of batch processing within reach of most analytical testing laboratories.
